![]() Most galleries are always looking for and accepting proposals so put one together with some ideas and make it happen. All so far have been a blast to prepare for and even more fun once the show opens. I had a show in Seattle at the Blue Bottle gallery in September, one in Kansas City that opened December 5th and one in Florida at the Bear and Bird gallery opening in February. The gallery scene I have to say is a lot of fun. What advice would you like to give people who would like to sell their works online, or get into a gallery? I work as an illustrator/ designer/art director on various projects all day and night long. The best cheap simple pencil you can find.ĭo you think they will send me a free case of them? My favorite tool would be my lucky Mirado Black Warrior 100% premium cedar pencils. I think that is big key for any profession. It sounds crazy but if I did not do this as a job I would sit around and draw all day anyway so continuing to make great work is a lucky thing to be able to do. I just really love doing what I am doing. To sit that pile in your office and admire it and use it as inspiration is a great tool. When ever I get back from a trip I always come home with a big stack of books and toys and art and stickers and all kinds of good things. Miller, Mary Blair, Richard Scarry and Aurelius Battaglia. One specific thing that I really draw inspiration from is vintage children’s golden books. I have lots of friends that are very talented illustrators that inspire me everyday. Not the best example of how I sketch but some funny things. After I choose which ideas have the most legs I move on to a tighter sketch.ĭo you keep a journal/sketchbook, and would you mind if we had a sneak peek? I keep a little sketchbook at all times and when I begin a project I start by making little thumbnails where I work out composition and shape. When I start a process no matter what the job I always sketch first. I was hooked from their on.Ĭould you tell us more about your thought process when you start a piece? A real life pro football player even came to my school to see me too, I felt pretty cool. I thought this drawing thing is pretty sweet. It was published on 80,000+ tickets and I went down on the field and was on the jumbo-tron and won free season tickets. I won a contest where one of my drawings was selected to be on the season tickets of Kansas City’s professional football team the Chiefs. I can remember my first real taste of illustration in the 4th grade. My father is an illustrator and I grew up watching my father and knew that was what I wanted to do. I got into illustration at a very young age. How did you get your start in illustration? ![]() On a personal note I marrying my beautiful girlfriend ( a fabulous graphic designer in her own right) in June so we are getting ready for that. I just designed a toy for kidrobot that is being released in May 2009 which is a real thrill. My work ranges from traditional branding jobs to greeting card design to lots of gig posters and band merch and of course various illustration projects. Well, I live in Kansas City as a designer and illustrator and feel very lucky to work on great projects everyday. Website/Shop: Illustration media: mixed media: silkscreen, digital, paint The fabulous Tad Carpenter is one of the participants for our PikaPackage Project in December where he sent in prints from his show Mayhem, Mischief and Monsters, and his work is wonderfully bright and cheery! He’s also one of the sweetest too, and I’m so happy that he’s going places, especially since he was mentioned in a lot of places including Drawn! and Illustration Mundo.

Albertosaurus had a matching set of upper and lower teeth-their functions were consistent from front-to-back along the jaw-but in Tyrannosaurus the patterns of the upper and lower teeth differed. There was one notable way in which Albertosaurus and Tyrannosaurus differed, though. The small and stout front teeth were likely used for pulling large pieces of meat from carcasses, the much larger teeth in the middle of the jaw were adapted to coping with the stresses of struggling prey, and the teeth at the rear of the jaw were positioned to deliver heavy, crushing forces in an arrangement Reichel likened to a clamp. (The differences between the teeth can perhaps best be seen in the skull of the juvenile Tyrannosaurus " Jane".) What Reichel wanted to know was how these various teeth functioned, and so she created computerized, 3-D models of Albertosaurus and Tyrannosaurus teeth to test how they would have held up to the stresses and strains created by biting.Īs might be expected for large predators, the teeth of both tyrant dinosaurs were suited to different tasks. The teeth at the front of the jaw are small and closely packed those in the middle of the jaw are exceptionally long and curved and those at the back of the jaw are smaller and only slightly recurved. What this meant for how the tyrant dinosaurs ate was addressed in a Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences paper by Miriam Reichel last year.Īlthough the teeth of Albertosaurus and Tyrannosaurus may seem to be all the same, these dinosaurs actually had three different tooth classes. Pakasuchus, an extinct cousin of modern crocodiles found in the 105-million-year-old rock of Tanzania, had three different types of teeth in its jaws, and even the mighty Tyrannosaurus and Albertosaurus possessed differentiated teeth. Among reptiles, on the other hand, multiple species have been found with a variety of tooth shapes in their jaws. Dolphins, for example, have jaws full of nearly identical, conical teeth. Not all mammals have differentiated sets of teeth. The dental differences were presented as one of the ways in which mammals were superior to reptiles, but like a number of other things I was taught in grade school, this wasn't quite right. Mammals had a full, enamel-covered toolkit in their mouths-incisors, canines, premolars, and molars suited to different tasks-while reptiles had only one kind of tooth. When I was in elementary school, I was told that mammals and reptiles could easily be told apart by their teeth. ![]() The term is the heat capacity ratio, i.e. ![]() Under these conditions it can be shown from only the five conservation equations above that the local speed of sound within the fluid is given by: As a very weak wave is being transmitted, the assumptions made above regarding no heat transfer and inviscid flow are valid here, and any variations in the temperature and pressure are small. The speed of sound describes the speed at which a pressure wave is transmitted through the air chamber by a small movement of the piston. Without knowledge of the local speed of sound we cannot gauge where we are on the compressibility spectrum.Īs a simple mind experiment, consider the plunger in a plastic syringe. Where is the specific universal gas constant (normalised by molar mass) and is the specific heat at constant pressure.įundamental to the analysis of supersonic flow is the concept of the speed of sound. – Conservation of entropy (in adiabatic and inviscid flow only): This means that at two stations of the flow, 1 and 2, the following expressions must hold: The isentropic flow described above is governed by five fundamental conservation equations that are expressed in terms density ( ), pressure ( ), velocity ( ), area ( ), mass flow rate ( ), temperature ( ) and entropy ( ). Hence, expansion of a gas leads to an increase in its velocity. some of the internal energy of the gas is converted into kinetic energy. As the flow velocity of a gas increases, the pressure, temperature and density must fall in order to conserve energy, i.e. These stagnation values are the highest values that the gas can possibly attain. The temperature, pressure and density of a fluid at rest are known as the stagnation temperature, stagnation pressure and stagnation density, respectively. The answer is the fundamental law of conservation of energy. This type of flow is known as isentropic (constant entropy), and includes fluid flow over aircraft wings, but not fluid flowing through rotating turbines.Īt this point you might be wondering how we can possible increase the speed of a gas without passing it through some machine that adds energy to the flow? at constant energy, meaning no external work (for example by a compressor) is done on the fluid.inviscid, meaning no friction is present.adiabatic, meaning there is no heat transfer out of or into the control volume. For example, let’s consider an arbitrary control volume of fluid and assume that any flow of this fluid is The fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of compressible flow are described by five fundamental equations, of which Bernoulli’s equation is a special case under the conditions of constant density. This means that air flowing over a normal passenger car can be treated as incompressible, whereas the flow over a modern jumbo jet is not. As a rule of thumb, the demarcation line for compressibility is around 30% the speed of sound, or around 100 m/s for dry air close to Earth’s surface. This type of flow is known as compressible. As the speed of a fluid approaches the speed of sound, the properties of the fluid undergo changes that cannot be modelled accurately using Bernoulli’s equation. The underlying assumption of constant density is only valid for low-speed flows, but does not hold in the case of high-speed flows where the kinetic energy causes changes in the gas’ density. The fact is that Bernoulli’s equation is not a fundamental equation of aerodynamics at all, but a particular case of the conservation of energy applied to a fluid of constant density. It is so fundamental to aerodynamics that it is often cited ( incorrectly!) when explaining how aircraft wings create lift. One of the most basic equations in fluid dynamics is Bernoulli’s equation: the relationship between pressure and velocity in a moving fluid. However, understanding this design methodology is naturally easier by first reading what comes before.) In any case, the real treat is at the end of the post where I go through the design of rocket nozzles. I have tried to explain the equations as good as possible using diagrams. ( Caveat: There is a little bit more maths in this post than usual. The gladius was the short, stabbing sword of the legionary, an ideal weapon in close-quarters action, where the aim was to keep up one’s guard, avoid exposing the body, and thrust forwards through gaps in the opponent’s defence so as to inflict deep, deadly wounds to abdomen and groin. ![]() It could be hurled either in defence or, more typically, in attack, devastating and traumatising the enemy line before contact. The scutum was a large oval or rectangular body-shield that could be used to form a defensive shield-wall, to give protection in attack, and as a weapon in its own right, when used to punch an enemy and knock him off balance. Vercingetorix surrenders to Julius Caesar ![]() Neither Charles Goodyear nor anyone in his family was connected with the company. The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, founded in Akron, Ohio by Frank Seiberling nearly 40 years later, was named in honor of Charles Goodyear. At the time of his death, he was 59 years old, penniless, and deeply in debt. Suffering the adverse effects of years of exposure to dangerous chemicals, Goodyear collapsed at a hotel in New York City on July 1, 1860, dying later that day. It too was a happy marriage, but Goodyear was not destined to long enjoy it. Clarissa died in 1848 at age 39, leaving six children, between the ages of 4 and 17.Īt age 54, while still struggling to defend his patents and commercialize his invention, Goodyear married 40-year-old Mary Starr (who had not previously been married) and the couple would go on to have two children together. Meanwhile, his wife Clarissa contracted tuberculosis and much of the family’s income was devoted to her medical expenses and extensive travel in search of a cure. He continued to struggle financially for the rest of his life, embroiled in litigation with other inventors over the validity of his patent, preventing him from profiting from it. So, Charles Goodyear became wealthy as a result? Unfortunately, no. It was one of the most profoundly important technological achievements of the 19th century. It is thanks to vulcanization that rubber can be used to make tires, shoe soles, hoses, and countless other items. Goodyear filed his patent application for vulcanized rubber on Febru(one hundred seventy-nine years ago today) and the patent was issued four months later. In 1843 he wrote a friend, “I have invented a new process of hardening India rubber by means of sulphur and it is as much superior to the old method as the malleable iron is superior to cast iron. ![]() After numerous failures, his breakthrough came when he tried heating the rubber together with sulfur and other additives. Goodyear was determined to find a chemical solution to overcome those issues, beginning his experiments while in jail. The principal troubles with finding commercial applications for natural rubber was that the material was inelastic and was not durable, decomposing and becoming sticky depending on temperature. In was an inauspicious beginning to his career as a scientist and inventor. By the end of the year his business was bankrupt and he was thrown into debtor’s prison. In 1830, at age 29, Goodyear was suffering from health issues and his rubber experiments (which he had funded by borrowing) had not been successful. His experimentation would change the world, but Goodyear’s path to success would be challenging. In the late 1820s he became particularly fascinated with finding and improving practical applications for natural rubber (called India rubber). Goodyear was a competent merchant, but his passions were chemistry, materials science, and invention. ![]() At age 23 he married Clarissa Beecher and soon afterwards the couple moved to Philadelphia, where Goodyear opened a hardware store of his own. Charles Goodyear left school at age 12 to work in his father’s hardware store in Connecticut. Morī is the present infinitive of the deponent verb morior 'to die'. It is reconstructed as ideally pronounced as something like if spoken by an ancient Roman around the beginning of the AD era. In English, the phrase is typically pronounced / m ə ˈ m ɛ n t oʊ ˈ m ɔːr i/, mə- MEN-toh MOR-ee. The Danse Macabre and Death personified with a scythe as the Grim Reaper are even more direct evocations of the trope. Often these function within a work whose main subject is something else, such as a portrait, but the vanitas is an artistic genre where the theme of death is the main subject. Often this alone is enough to evoke the trope, but other motifs such as a coffin, hourglass and wilting flowers signify the impermanence of human mundane life. The most common motif is a skull, often accompanied by one or more bones.
